Barbara’s mother’s childhood in Berlin, ending with her family’s escape in 1939, has given her perspective on the years of Hitler’s rise to power. That her mother and Jutta lived in Berlin in the same years made both stories come to life. Even though Berlin is far from Budapest, her family’s experiences mirrored Tom’s as the persecution of the Jews spread throughout Europe.

Her writing projects, some for her undergraduate degree at Earlham College, some for her studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and graduate work at Emerson College, included essays on all aspects of the arts. She has also written poetry, a screenplay, and stage plays.

It has been her joy to bring Tom and Jutta’s story to a wide audience.
